When people travel to Val d’Orcia, one of the most common questions is: “What is the best restaurant?”

The truth is—there isn’t one.

Not because there aren’t good places (there are so many!), but because the idea of a single “best” doesn’t really make sense here. What makes a meal memorable is not only the food, but how well it matches what you are looking for in that specific moment.

This is not an exhaustive list. There are many more places in the area, each with its own character.
These are simply the ones we tend to recommend, depending on the moment, a small guide to help you choose better!

  • Trattoria Osenna (San Quirico d’Orcia)
    A traditional trattoria. Excellent fresh pasta—pici are made by hand daily.

  • La cisterna nel borgo (Castiglion d’Orcia)
    An honest, historic place. It feels a bit stopped in time and reminds me of my childhood Sunday outings.

Are you drawn to a farm-to-table experience?

  • Agriturismo Il Rigo - of course - (San Quirico d’Orcia)

    Seasonal, curated, and rooted in the territory. We are open daily for dinner, offering the chance to enjoy a thoughtful meal surrounded by the quiet of the countryside.

  • Locanda Demetra (Montalcino)
    An intimate farm restaurant, ideal for a relaxed lunch under the pergola, with a view towards Montalcino.
    Fixed menu or a few seasonal dishes. Reservation is strongly recommended.

  • Biofattoria L’Upupa (San Giovanni d’Asso - Montalcino)
    An authentic farmhouse with animals, completely family-run—a very special place. Offers home-style meals and visits. Ideal for families.

Campacavallo lab

  • Campacavallo lab (Montepulciano)
    Open as a restaurant during the week (reservation required), and active with small catering, classes and events in the summer months. Dinners in the lab are often experimental journeys full of flavours—definitely worth a visit.

  • La Bandita townhouse (Pienza)
    A contemporary setting, with minimal design and an open kitchen.
    A different rhythm compared to traditional trattorie, with a modern approach to ingredients.

 

Are you looking for a comfort bite, something simple and relaxed?

Bottega di Portanuova

  • La bottega di Portanuova (San Quirico d’Orcia)
    One of our favourite informal stops. Perfect for a unforgettable panino and a glass of craft beer, in a very easy-going atmosphere.

  • Pizzeria il Vecchio Mulino (Torrenieri)
    A “pizzeria agricola” with very good dough and quality ingredients. A reliable and satisfying choice.

 

Outdoor dinner at Lupaia

Is it a special occasion?

  • Logge del Vignola (Montepulciano)
    Elegant and intimate, a lovely place for a romantic dinner, to celebrate a special occasion and feel taken care of.

  • Lupaia (Montefollonico)
    Exclusive, charming and very special. Chef Luca’s menus are both elegant and refreshing—definitely appropriate for a romantic dinner or a special occasion.

  • Il Barrino (Bagno Vignoni)

Perfect for an aperitif or a cocktail, and for a touch of nightlife during the summer months.

Start from yourself, not from the list

Try asking: “I’m in the mood for something like… what would you recommend?”

The answer will almost always be better.
